Who Were Michael Jensen and Michael Hoosock? Two Officers Killed in New York

Two police officers in New York, Michael Jensen with the Syracuse Police Department and Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Hoosock, died in the line of duty over the weekend.

The two were shot and killed by Christopher R. Murphy during a shootout at Murphy’s Salina residence.

On Sunday, April 14th, two Syracuse Police officers – Jensen and a colleague – attempted to pull over a vehicle on the city’s west side at about 7 p.m. Sunday.

Police said they tried to stop the vehicle but the driver, Murphy, refused and fled the area.

The officers got the license plate number and traced the car to a residential address on Darien Drive in Salina.

Syracuse Police, along with members of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office, went to the address and found the vehicle.

Murphy was inside the home with a friend and had told the friend to flee as he vowed not to allow police to apprehend him.

The friend tried escaping and was captured by law enforcement, telling them they had indulged in drugs (cocaine) and that Murphy had started acting erratically.

The Syracuse PD team along with their counterparts from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s office exchanged gunfire with the suspect, with Jensen and Hoosock getting killed before Murphy was also shot and killed.

Hoosock was a 17-year veteran of the force and leaves behind a wife and three young children ages 3, 5, and 7.

He was the bomb squad commander for the Sheriff’s Office and had just been promoted to Lieutenant last June.

“You will never find anyone who has a bad word to say about Lieutenant Hoosock,” said Onondaga County Sheriff Tobias Shelley.

Jensen had been on the force for less than three years, Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile revealed.

“We lost two heroes last night,” Cecile said.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she was “horrified by the senseless killing” of the two officers.

“My prayers are with their families, loved ones, and their colleagues,” the governor posted on X.

“New York will never forget their heroism and service.”
