Who is Jamal Brooks - Police Release Fresh Details on New London CT Murd£r-Suicide

Authorities have identified Jamal Brooks as the man who died in an apparent New London, CT murder-suicide that occurred over the weekend.

A 31-year-old man and his 30-year-old girlfriend were found seriously injured following a shooting at a New London apartment Saturday morning.

The shooting was reported at an apartment in the 100 block of Hawthorne Drive around 9:34 a.m.

Upon arrival, police found the man with one gunshot wound and the woman with multiple gunshot wounds.

Both victims were treated on scene before they were taken to the hospital, where the main died and the woman is still in critical condition, police said.

Police also found in the apartment, two children, ages 5 and 9, who were not visibly injured but were taken to the hospital for an evaluation.

A statement from New London Police Saturday read: “On Saturday, 3/23/2024, at approx. 9:34 a.m., New London Communications Center received a report of gunshot victims at 159 Hawthorne Dr., New London, CT. New London Police and Fire personnel responded to the scene.

“Inside of an apartment at that location, police personnel located a 30 year old female victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. A 31 year old male victim suffering from one gunshot wound was also located. Both victims were determined to have sustained life threatening injuries.

“Life saving measures were implemented on scene by fire and police personnel and both victims were transported to L+M Hospital for treatment.

“Additionally within the apartment officers located two children, ages 9 and 5 who were not visibly injured. The two children were also transported to L+M Hospital for an evaluation.

“The 31 year old male was subsequently pronounced deceased at L+M Hospital.

“The 30 year old female is currently undergoing treatment and is listed in critical condition at L+M Hospital.

“Preliminarily, our agency is investigating what appears to be an incident of domestic violence (attempted murder / suicide).

“The identity of the 31 year old male is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The identity of the 30 year old female domestic violence victim will not be released,”

An updated release on Sunday identified the deceased as Jamal Brooks of 159 Hawthorne Dr New London, Connecticut.

It also said the female victim remains in critical condition in the hospital.

Donnette Brooks, who appears to be the mother of Jamal Brooks, also confirmed his passing with a couple of posts on Facebook.

“Keep my family in your prayers,hug and kiss your children no matter how old they are. It’s with a heavy that I am announcing the sudden passing of my son Jamal. They say God knows best but this one is painful. Sleep in Peace my son,” one post read.

Another said: “R.i.p son never know this would be the last pic you would send me I will always carry you in my heart gone but not forgotten I love you,”

New London is a seaport city and a port of entry on the northeast coast of the United States, located at the outlet of the Thames River in New London County, Connecticut. The city is part of the Southeastern Connecticut Planning Region.

New London is home to the United States Coast Guard Academy, Connecticut College, Mitchell College, and The Williams School.

The Coast Guard Station New London and New London Harbor is home port to the Coast Guard Cutter Coho and the Coast Guard’s tall ship Eagle.

The city had a population of 27,367 at the 2020 census.

The Norwich–New London metropolitan area includes 21 towns and 274,055 people.

The area was called Nameaug by the Pequot Indians. John Winthrop, Jr. founded the first English settlement here in 1646, making it about the 13th town settled in Connecticut. Inhabitants referred to it informally as Nameaug or as Pequot after the tribe.

In the 1650s, the colonists wanted to give the town the official name of London after London, England, but the Connecticut General Assembly wanted to name it Faire Harbour.

The citizens protested, declaring that they would prefer it to be called Nameaug if it could not be officially named London.

The legislature relented, and the town was officially named New London on March 10, 1658.

The town and city of New London are coextensive. Sections of the original town were ceded to form newer towns between 1705 and 1801. The towns of Groton, Ledyard, Montville, and Waterford, and portions of Salem and East Lyme, now occupy what had earlier been the outlying area of New London.

New London is bounded on the west and north by the town of Waterford on the east by the Thames River and Groton and on the south by Long Island Sound.

According to the 2006–2008 American Community Survey, non-Hispanic whites made up 54.6% of New London’s population. Non-Hispanic blacks made up 14.0% of the population.

Asians of non-Hispanic origin made up 4.6% of the city’s population.

Hispanics and Latinos made up 21.9% of the population, of which 13.8% were Puerto Rican.
