Who was Christopher R. Murphy? Shooter Who Killed Two Cops In New York

Christopher R. Murphy, 33, has been identified as the shooter who killed two police officers Sunday night in Liverpool, New York.

Murphy, who fled from a traffic stop by Syracuse Police, got into an exchange of gunfire with officers from Syracuse PD and Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office at his home on Darien Drive.

In the exchange of gunfire, two officers – identified as Syracuse Police Officer Michael Jensen and Onondaga Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Michael Hoosock – were shot and later succumbed to their injuries at Upstate University Hospital.

Murphy also died in the exchange after being transported to the same hospital.

The incident started Sunday, April 14th, 2024, at about 7:07 p.m. when Syracuse Police Officers encountered a suspicious vehicle in the area of Emerson Avenue and Hamilton Street.

Police officers attempted to stop the vehicle, however, the driver refused to stop and fled the area.

The officers lost sight of the vehicle but were able to record the license plate information.

After checking the vehicle’s registration, they determined the registered owner resides on Darien Drive, in Liverpool, New York.

Syracuse Police responded to the address, along with members of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and found the vehicle parked at the residence at 4945 Darien Drive.

Shortly after arrival, the police officers and sheriff’s deputies were encountered by Murphy and an exchange of gunfire followed.

Michael Jensen with the Syracuse Police and Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Hoosock were struck by gunfire.

The armed suspect was also shot.

As mentioned earlier, all three were carted to the Upstate University Hospital where life-saving measures were conducted but the two officers and the criminal all succumbed to their injuries.

Later Monday, Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick verified the identity of Christopher R. Murphy as the shooter.

The suspect was 33-years-old, from Salina, New York.

Murphy was previously charged in 2014 with driving while intoxicated by the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.

He was also charged with resisting arrest and failure to keep right.

Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile said Jensen had about three years on the job and was known for being “very active” and “very proactive,”.

Meanwhile, the Onondaga County Sheriff, Toby Shelley said his deceased deputy, Hoosock, was a “seasoned” law enforcement officer who had over 17 years on the force and left behind a wife and 3 children.
