Who is Carly Madison Gregg?

Carly Madison Gregg is a 14-year-old girl from Rankin County, Mississippi, who is topping headlines after shooting her mother and step father, killing the former and wounding the latter.

Gregg shot and killed her mother, 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, a former teacher of the month winner at Northwest Rankin High School, where Gregg also attended.

The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon in Brandon, Mississippi.

The victim was Ashley Smylie, a math teacher at Northwest Rankin High School, who was Carly Gregg’s mother.

Her stepfather was also injured during the incident and found with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

The stepfather arrived home and found Carly armed with a pistol and found Ashley Smylie, Carly’s mother, dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

A physical altercation ensued between the stepfather and Carly as he tried to disarm her after she shot him.

Carly fled into the backyard, jumped over a fence, and ran away.

Authorities apprehended Carly approximately 30 minutes later.

Carly Madison Gregg was taken into custody and transported to the Rankin County Juvenile Detention Center.

The State Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of Ashley Smylie’s death.

According to the narration of Rankin County police, on March 19, deputies received a call shortly after 5 p.m. about a shooting in the 200 block Ashton Way in Brandon, Mississippi.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they met with a man identified as the stepfather, who was suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

The stepfather said that he arrived home and found his wife, 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, dead from an apparent gunshot wound inside the residence, and his 14-year-old stepdaughter armed with a pistol.

The victim stated that the suspect shot at him and struck him in the shoulder.

The victim engaged the suspect physically and took the weapon from her.

The victim said 14-year-old Carly Madison Gregg ran to the backyard and jumped over a fence and fled.

Additional deputies responded to the area along with the Mississippi Highway Patrol’s helicopter. At about 5:35 p.m., Rankin County deputies found Gregg not far from the residence and took her into custody without incident.

Gregg is charged as an adult with murder and attempted murder. She was transported to the Rankin County Juvenile Detention Center.

“You can’t fathom those kinds of thoughts. You just wouldn’t think the child would do anything like this,” said neighbor Laruen Martinez.

“It just feels like there’s something missing. There’s something wrong. It’s like a level of caution that you don’t think something like that would happen.”

Ashley Smylie, 40-years-old, was a teacher at Northwest Rankin High School.

According to Vicksburg news, Smylie was an educator at Warren Central High School about five years ago and still has family in the Warren County area.

In November 2022, Ashley Smylie was recognized as the Teacher of the Month at Northwest Rankin High School.

Her daughter, Carly Gregg, also attended Northwest Rankin.

Currently, the motive behind the shooting is not clear.

Rankin County School officials confirmed the identity of Smylie as the victim of a homicide at the hands of her own daughter.

The Rankin County School District expressed their condolences and deep sympathy for the tragic loss of Ashley Smylie, a beloved math teacher at Northwest Rankin High School.

They stated that their thoughts and prayers are with the affected family during this difficult time.

Northwest Rankin High School is a suburban public high school located in Flowood, Mississippi, United States.

The school serves grades 9-12 and is part of the Rankin County School District.

The school’s attendance was approximately 1,700 students as of the 2018 campus census.

Northwest Rankin offers Pre-Advanced Placement (Pre-AP) and Advanced Placement (AP) courses in English, Math, Science, and Social Studies.

In addition, there are five four-year academic specializations (referred to as academies) offered in addition to several dual enrollment courses with Hinds Community College.

The academic specializations include the health science nursing academy, engineering academy, convergent media academy, educational leadership academy, and JROTC. All of these academies are four year programs that the student can receive an endorsement in upon graduation.

The incident occurred on February 13, 2024 at a residence on the 25 Ranch in Lander County.

Abel Berch called 911, reporting that he had shot his father.

Deputies arrived at the scene and found William Berch dead.

He had been shot multiple times with a rifle while seated at his desk in the office area of their home.

Abel Berch was arrested and is facing first-degree murder charges.

Like Carly Gregg, despite being a juvenile, he will be charged as an adult.

He has been arraigned and assigned a public defender, with a court appearance scheduled later this month.
