Joseph Deponceau was an Irondequoit man who was shot and killed by his own grandson in a shocking murder-suicide Thursday.
Deponceau, 80, was found dead of a gunshot wound by officers of the Irondequoit Police Department after they responded to a 911 call at 500 Pinegrove Ave.
The suspect, Andrew Vahey, 24, was later found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at Letchworth State Park.
Police were called to 500 Pinegrove Ave. following a 911 call from a hysterical person saying, “there was blood everywhere,”
The call had come from Deponceau’s girlfriend who told police Vahey had shot and killed his grandfather following an argument.
Officers surrounded Vahey’s residence at 522 Pinegrove around 7:20 a.m.
Calls inside were answered by Vahey’s roommate who told police he had gotten texts from Vahey saying he had just killed his grandfather and was going to kill himself.
Police issued a lookout for Vahey’s vehicle which was later spotted at Letchworth park.
Officers spotted him and attempted to contact him but he immediately shot himself.
According to police, Vahey and his grandfather had recently been arguing over some property.
