Nikki was born in Syracuse, New York, and grew up in a military family.

She met her future husband, Eric Johnson when they were both very young and at the Greenhill School in Dallas where Johnson was on scholarship.

Nakita attended Syracuse University and graduated with a degree in management from the Martin J. Whitman School of Business.

Following her education, she had a successful career in the wholesale and retail industry. 

She is reportedly a key account business manager and strategic buyer with experience working for companies like Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Costco. 

After they reconnected as adults, Eric Johnson and Nikki dated for four years before getting married in 2004.

In September 2023, Eric Johnson switched parties from Democrat to Republican.

The AP reported that Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson announced Friday that he is switching to the Republican Party, making the city the largest in the U.S. to be led by a GOP mayor.

“This is hardly a red wave. But it is clear that the nation and its cities have reached a time for choosing,” Johnson wrote in an editorial in the Wall Street Journal. 

“And the overwhelming majority of Americans who call our cities home deserve to have real choices—not ‘progressive’ echo chambers—at city hall.”

Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott quickly welcomed Johnson into the party. 

“Texas is getting more Red every day,” Abbott posted on X.

Eric Johnson would remain in power until 2027.

“The voters of Dallas deserved to know where he stood before he ran for reelection as Mayor,” the Texas Democratic party said in a statement. 

“He wasn’t honest with his constituents, and knew he would lose to a Democrat if he flipped before the election.”

Eric Lynn Johnson was born on October 10, 1975, in Dallas, Texas. 

He grew up in a low-income neighborhood in West Dallas, where he faced many hardships and challenges. 

Johnson attended Dallas Independent School District schools until the second grade, when he received a scholarship to attend Greenhill School, a prestigious private school in Addison, Texas, through the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas. He graduated from Greenhill School in 1994.

As already mentioned earlier, it was at Greenhill School where the future Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson would meet his wife.

Johnson went on to attend Harvard College, where he graduated cum laude with a degree in history in 1998. 

He was a resident of Cabot House and a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.

He also headed up the community service efforts of both the fraternity and the Harvard Black Students Association, which earned him several scholarships and awards. 

Johnson spent the summer between his junior and senior year of college studying public policy at the University of California at Berkeley as part of the Public Policy and International Affairs Fellowship Program.

After graduating from Harvard, Johnson returned to Dallas to work as an investment banker with Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, and then as an aide to state representative Yvonne Davis. 

He also worked as a graduate intern for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, doing research to support several of their desegregation lawsuits in the Deep South and to combat the proposed elimination of remedial education on City University of New York system campuses.

Johnson decided to pursue a dual degree in law and public affairs, which he earned from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and the School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, respectively, in 2003. 

He was a public interest scholar and a member of the Journal of International Economic Law at Penn Law, and a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and a Truman Scholar at Princeton. 

He also attended Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government’s Senior Executives in State and Local Government program and became a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Law Career and Community Involvement

Johnson was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in November 2003. He began his law career as an associate at Haynes and Boone, LLP, a prominent law firm in Dallas, where he specialized in corporate finance and securities law. 

He later joined Andrews Kurth Kenyon and Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe as Of Counsel, where he continued to practice corporate law. He is currently a partner with the international law firm of Locke Lord LLP, where he focuses on public finance and public law.

In addition to his law practice, Johnson has been actively involved in the Dallas community, especially in the areas of education, youth development, and homelessness. 

Political Career and Accomplishments

Johnson’s political career began in 2010, when he ran for the Texas House of Representatives in District 100, which covers parts of Dallas and Mesquite. 

He won the Democratic primary runoff against incumbent Terri Hodge, who was facing federal corruption charges, and then defeated Republican candidate Sandra Crenshaw in the general election. 

He was sworn in as a state representative on April 20, 2010.

Johnson served in the Texas House for nine years, from 2010 to 2019. 

He was a member of several legislative committees, including Appropriations, Ways and Means, Higher Education, and Natural Resources. He also served as chairman of the Dallas Area Legislative Delegation. 

He authored and sponsored several bills on various issues, such as criminal justice reform, education funding, health care access, economic development, and civil rights. 

He was recognized as one of the most effective and influential legislators in the state by various media outlets and advocacy groups.

In 2019, Johnson decided to run for mayor of Dallas, a nonpartisan position that is elected by the city’s voters. 

He faced nine other candidates in the general election, including former Dallas City Council member Scott Griggs, who was considered the frontrunner. 

Johnson finished first in the general election with 20.7% of the vote, followed by Griggs with 18.4%. 

The two candidates advanced to a runoff election, which Johnson won with 55.7% of the vote. 

He was sworn in as the 60th mayor of Dallas on June 17, 2019, by U.S. District Court Judge Sam Lindsay.
