Who is Bill Butler? Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Deputy Killed by Eric Fiddler

Bill Butler was a Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Deputy who was killed after conducting a traffic stop Thursday afternoon.

Butler, 51, stopped Eric Michael Fiddler in the area of Beecher Road and Lamb Road just southeast of Hillsdale.

Fiddler shot Butler and ran away from the scene but was killed later in the day in a shootout with Police.

Butler was transported to an area hospital but died from his injuries.

Michigan State Police pursued the suspect, Eric Michael Fiddler and found him near the intersection of Culbert and Osseo streets in Hillsdale County around 6:15 p.m.

“Fiddler was instructed to surrender and produced a weapon and fired on troopers. Troopers returned fire and Fiddler was pronounced deceased on scene,” MSP said on X (formerly Twitter).

“We are sad to add that the deputy that was shot on scene has passed away from his injuries,”

According to local media reports, Deputy Bill Butler was deeply rooted in the Hillsdale area and was known to serve various areas within Hillsdale County.

Apart from his duties as a deputy, Bill Butler was also involved in real estate. He was listed as a realtor with the Hillsdale County Board of Realtors.
